Stephen F. Austin’s Game Moved Back a Week; Gardner-Webb Seeks November Schedule

It was a busy Monday for FCS teams as three pieces of news hit the wire. The first piece was that Stephen F. Austin’s scheduled game for this upcoming Saturday, October 10 versus Angelo State was moved back a week to Saturday, October 17.

The game was postponed due to COVID cases for Angelo State. Kickoff will remain at 5 PM Eastern Time and the game will remain on the campus of SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas on October 17.

The teams met 21 times between 1964 and 1995 with Angelo State holding a 12-9 lead in the series. The most recent matchup in 1995 saw the Lumberjacks win 17-3.

Gardner-Webb Plans November Schedule

The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs made it known on Monday that they planned to play at least 2 games this November and will also play football in the spring.

The Bulldogs would like one of the two games to be a home contest and reached out last week to potential opponents. As of this writing, no opponents have been revealed for the planned November schedule.

“Our team would benefit from getting on the field and playing this fall,” head coach Tre Lamb stated. “After missing so much time together with no spring practice, little offseason conditioning or strength training this team was far from ready in August or September. As we have been able to string together more consistent practices, the confidence has grown. Our kids would love the chance to take advantage of the opportunity to play a game or two in November.”

Tre Lamb is in his first year as head coach of the Bulldogs after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech.

Bayou Classic Headed to Shreveport

The always highly anticipated yearly Bayou Classic matchup between Grambling State and Southern has a new, temporary home.

With renovations scheduled to begin on the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans during the offseason, the Bayou Classic was stuck in without a home as a result of the SWAC moving its football season to the spring.

The Bayou Classic has been played annually in New Orleans since 1974 with the exception of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina caused damage to the Superdome and the game moved to Houston.

The two teams will meet in the Bayou Classic on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Independence Stadium Shreveport, Louisiana. The matchup between the Tigers and Jaguars has seen one game played in Shreveport back in 1973. Grambling State defeated Southern 19-14 before it became the Bayou Classic.

The series has been balanced since 1974 with both teams winning 23 games apiece.
