Playoff Bracket, Notes, and National Champion
The I-AA Playoffs maintained the same format for the seventh straight season. 16 teams were selected, the top four teams were seeded, and campus sites were used through the semifinals. The title game was played on December 19 at Marshall University Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia for the first time.
The home team is listed on the bottom of each matchup in the bracket below while an asterisk (*) denotes the number of overtime periods played if a game went to overtime. Marshall (12-3 Overall, 5-2 Southern Conference) got their revenge in the 1992 I-AA title game by defeating Youngstown State (11-3-1 Overall as I-AA Independent) 31-28. It was Marshall’s first I-AA/FCS championship.
Conference Changes
There was one conference change for the 1992 season, but in the background only. The Gateway Football Conference merged with the Missouri Valley Conference but kept the Gateway name. The Gateway Football Conference eventually became the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2008.
Team Changes
Two teams left I-AA to jump up to I-A: Arkansas State became an independent at the I-A level (previously an independent at I-AA) and Nevada left the Big Sky for the Big West.
Nicholls moved from an independent to the Southland Conference while Tennessee-Martin moved from I-AA independent status into the Ohio Valley Conference. Wikipedia is missing Georgia Southern for the 1992 season, but both the NCAA and the school have them in their handbook. The Eagles were still an I-AA independent for one final season before joining the Southern Conference in 1993.
Troy was in the middle of their transition to I-AA as they would make the I-AA playoffs in their first season in 1993. The NCAA has them starting in 1993, but we include them as an I-AA team due to the transition.
