After two coaching changes were announced on Monday, there was another change on Tuesday with Eric Dooley as Southern fired Dooley effective immediately. Associate head coach Terrence Graves will take over as head coach for the Jaguars’ final game in the Bayou Classic versus Grambling.
Eric Dooley spent four seasons at Prairie View A&M from 2018 through 2021 where he guided the Panthers to a 20-17 record and was 16-8 in the SWAC. His final season culminated with a SWAC Championship appearance – the first appearance since 2009 for the Panthers – but they lost 27-10 to Jackson State.
That success at Prairie View A&M led him to be hired by Southern and he took over a team that went 4-7 overall in 2021 (3-5 in the SWAC). In 2022, he led the Jaguars to a 7-5 record and the SWAC Championship but he once again lost to Jackson State (43-24). Showing success in his first year led to higher expectations for 2023 but the Jaguars couldn’t eclipse the 2022 record. They currently sit at 5-5 heading into the Bayou Classic on November 25. The most recent game for Southern before Dooley was fired? A 27-21 loss to Prairie View A&M at home.
Dooley finished his tenure at Southern with a 12-10 overall and he went 9-6 in the SWAC. He has a career record of 32-27 overall and 25-14 in the SWAC.
