East Tennessee State has decided to forge a different path after firing George Quarles. Quarles was in charge for two seasons, going 3-8 in both campaigns and 3-13 in the Southern Conference. Quarles is the latest coaching change with a full list here.
Quarles had incredible success at Maryville High School (Tennessee) where he won 11 state championships between 1999 and 2016. He moved up to the college ranks as an associate head coach for Furman from 2017 through 2021 along with other offensive duties.
ETSU and Quarles agreed to a five-year contract in December 2021 after the retirement of Randy Sanders. Quarles had the unenviable task of replacing Sanders who led the Bucs to their second and third FCS playoff appearances in 2018 and 2021. Quarles took over a team that went 11-2 overall, won the outright SoCon title in 2021, and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs.
