Hampton Removes Interim Tag for Head Coach Trent Boykin

Trent Boykin is officially the head coach of the Hampton Pirates. Boykin was named the interim in April following the removal of the previous head coach Robert Prunty. Prunty was 26-29 overall with Hampton between 2018 through 2023 as the Pirates moved from the MEAC to an FCS independent in 2018, to the Big South in 2019, and finally to the CAA in 2022.

Boykin currently has the Pirates at 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the CAA heading into its October 19 clash with North Carolina A&T. Two of Hampton’s three losses have been by 2 points: 30-28 to Morgan State in the season opener and 46-44 in double overtime to Rhode Island on October 5.

Boykin had previous head coaching experience with the NCAA Division II program Lane College from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). In his two seasons in 2008 and 2009, he went 4-17 overall and 4-14 in the SIAC. Boykin was an assistant coach with Arkon from 1012 through 2018 and was Hampton’s special teams and running backs coach from 2020 through 2023.
