McNeese (Southland) has fired head coach Gary Goff after three seasons with the Cowboys. Goff went 10-23 overall and 5-14 in the Southland Conference.
Goff began his coaching career at NCAA Division II Tiffin University in 2011, compiling an overall record of 38-50 in nine seasons. He was hired by his alma mater, Valdosta State, in 2019 and led them to the Gulf South title in 2019 but lost in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Valdosta State did not compete during the 2020 season. In 2021, the Blazers made a run to the D-II National Championship but fell to the top-seeded Ferris State Bulldogs.
On the heels of back-to-back Gulf South championships and an overall record of 22-3 with Valdosta State, McNeese brought in Goff for the 2022 season. The Cowboys started 1-7 but rattled off three straight wins to end the season. McNeese went winless in 2023 and had a solid start to the 2024 campaign sitting at 4-2 but finished 6-6 overall and tied for fifth in the SLC. For his career, Goff is 70-76 overall and 49-62 in conference games.
McNeese hasn’t finished with a winning record since 2019 when they went 7-5 and hasn’t won the Southland Conference since 2015, which is the last time the Cowboys reached the FCS playoffs.
