Former North Carolina A&T (CAA) assistant coach Shawn Gibbs has been tabbed as the next head coach for the Aggies. Gibbs was an assistant with the Aggies in 2002 and from 2011 through 2021. Gibbs will replace Vincent Brown who was fired earlier this week after going 2-21 overall and 0-16 in the CAA in his two seasons.
Gibbs was most recently the head coach at NCAA Division II Fort Valley State. He led the Wildcats to a winning record all three seasons and tied for second place overall in the SIAC in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, FVSU was selected to represent SIAC in the inaugural Florida Beach Bowl against the CIAA’s Johnson C. Smith. The Wildcats won the game 23-10 to finish 8-3 overall. In his three seasons, Gibbs went 22-9 overall and 17-6 in SIAC games.
Gibbs started his coaching career in 2002 as the tight ends coach for North Carolina A&T and moved to his alma mater North Carolina Central as the running backs coach from 2003 through 2006. In 2007, he took the same position with Grambling State and remained with the Tigers through the 2010 season. He returned to the Aggies again in 2011 as the running backs coach for a decade before taking over the head coaching position at Fort Valley State.
Gibbs will make his North Carolina A&T debut on the road versus Tennessee State on Saturday, August 30.
