For the second straight year, East Tennessee State (Southern) is looking for a new coach after Tre Lamb left for Tulsa (American Athletic). In Lamb’s lone season with the Buccaneers, ETSU went 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Conference. Lamb received a contract extension through 2028 after ETSU’s 2024 campaign.
The Bucs started the season 1-1 and headed into an early season clash at home against FCS powerhouse North Dakota State (MVFC). ETSU held a 35-23 lead late in the game but the Bison scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to pull out the 38-35 victory. ETSU responded by winning four of the next five games to move to 5-3 overall but ended the season 2-2 with wins against Western Carolina and VMI and losses against Mercer and Furman.
Lamb was hired by ETSU in November 2023 after former head coach George Quarles was let go. Lamb was previously the head coach of Gardner-Webb from 2020 through 2023 where he won back-to-back Big South and Big South-OVC titles in 2022 and 2023. The conference titles resulted in the first two FCS Playoff appearances in school history for the Bulldogs. Lamb is 27-25 overall and 17-11 in conference games in his five seasons as head coach.
Lamb has seen a quick ascent up the coaching ranks. He played quarterback at Tennessee Tech from 2008 through 2012 and was the quarterbacks coach at TTU in 2013. He took the same role at Mercer from 2014 through 2017 and was named offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech in 2018. After two seasons as TTU’s offensive coordinator, he became the head coach at Gardner-Webb in 2020.
