UTRGV Installing New Turf at Stadiums

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) will have new turf fields at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville, Texas, and Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg, Texas. Installation of the Edinburg field is nearing completion, while the Brownsville field saw a delay due to conflicting scheduling arrangements.

The September 13, 2025, matchup against Langston University was scheduled to be in Brownsville, but has been moved to Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg. The UTRGV-Langston game was a replacement itself after North American University discontinued its football program in February. All seven 2025 home games will be played in Edinburg and UTRGV will split games between its stadiums in Brownsville and Edinburg in future seasons.

UTRGV’s first season will be as a member of the Southland Conference, and will start on Saturday, August 30, with a home game against NCAA Division II Sul Ross State (Lone Star). After a game at Prairie View A&M (SWAC) on Saturday, September 6, the Vaqueros will return with back-to-back games in Edinburg. UTRGV will welcome the aforementioned Langston Lions on September 13, followed by Texas Wesleyan on Saturday, September 20. Both Langston and Texas Wesleyan are members of the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference.

UTRGV’s first conference game will be at Southeastern Louisiana (9/27), followed by a home matchup against Houston Christian (10/4). The schedule continues with games at Lamar (10/18), home to Incarnate Word (10/25), at Stephen F. Austin (11/1), home to Nicholls (11/8), at McNeese (11/15), and the regular season finale at home versus East Texas A&M (11/22).
