The Idaho State Bengals (Big Sky) are looking to keep head coach Cody Hawkins in Pocatello through the end of the decade. The school announced a five-year extension through the 2030 season with a base salary of $230,000 annually.
Hawkins was hired in late 2022 to replace Charlie Ragle. Ragle spent one season with Idaho State, going 1-10 overall and 1-7 in the Big Sky during the 2022 campaign. The Bengals went 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky during Hawkins’s first year in 2023. Idaho State improved to 5-7 overall in 2024 while going 3-5 in conference for the second straight season.
Hawkins is the son of Dan Hawkins, who served as the head coach at Boise State, Colorado, and UC Davis. The younger Hawkins played quarterback at Colorado under his father and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ohio State. From 2017 through 2022, he was an assistant coach at UC Davis, once again under his father. Cody Hawkins was the wide receivers coach from 2017 through 2020 and the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Idaho State was voted to finish in the middle of the Big Sky for the upcoming 2025 season. The Bengals start the season with three straight road games. ISU will play at UNLV (Mountain West) on Saturday, August 23, in Week 0 action, followed by contests at Southern Utah (UAC) on August 30 and New Mexico (Mountain West) on September 6. The final non-conference game will be at home against Lincoln (CA) on September 20 before starting Big Sky play at Northern Colorado on September 27.
