Weber State Fires Mickey Mental

The Weber State Wildcats have dismissed head coach Mickey Mental with two games left in the 2025 season. Mental went 13-20 overall and 8-14 in the Big Sky during his three seasons with the Wildcats. Weber State named Brent Myers as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Mental was hired by Weber State in December 2022 to replace Jay Hill, which wasn’t going to be easy. Hill had an incredibly successful tenure at Weber State, going 68-39 overall and 50-19 in Big Sky games. Weber State won four straight Big Sky titles from 2017 through 2020 with Hill at the helm. Before Hill’s arrival, Weber State had only four FCS playoff appearances, reaching the quarterfinals twice. Under Hill, the Wildcats reached the FCS playoffs six times, made three quarterfinal appearances, one semifinal, and had four seasons with 10+ wins. After the 2022 season, Hill departed to take the defensive coordinator and associate head coaching roles at BYU.

Entering 2023, the Wildcats were a preseason top 15 team, but sat at 3-5 going into November. Weber State won the final three games to reach 6-5, which included an upset over #4 Idaho. The 2024 season saw Weber State ranked in the preseason top 25 once again. The Wildcats opened 3-3 with an upset of #8 Montana to start October, but unfortunately, lost five in a row and finished 4-8 overall.

This season, Weber State sits at 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the Big Sky with two games remaining. The three victories were against Butler, McNeese, and Portland State, while 6 of the 7 losses have been by three or more scores. Weber State ends the season with a road game at Idaho State and a home matchup versus Northern Arizona.

Before joining Weber State, Mental was the head coach of NCAA Division II Notre Dame College in 2020 and 2021. The Falcons went 5-0 and won the Mountain East Conference title in the COVID-disrupted 2020-21 campaign, while the 2021 fall season saw NDC tie atop the MEC standings with Frostburg State. Notre Dame earned the automatic qualifier bid thanks to the head-to-head win over Frostburg State and reached the second round of the D-II before losing to Shepherd. Mental went 16-2 overall and 14-1 in Mountain East games in his two seasons.

For his career, Mental is 29-22 overall and 22-15 in conference games. He played quarterback at Baldwin Wallace University and began his coaching career at Brookside High School in 2008. From 2009 through 2019, he was an assistant coach at Notre Dame College before landing the head coaching position in 2020.

Mental is the third FCS coach to be dismissed during the season, following Terrence Graves at Southern and Chris Hatcher at Samford. The full log of changes that have occurred and will happen throughout the offseason can be found here.
