Hampton Fires Trent Boykin

Trent Boykin is no longer the head coach of the Hampton Pirates. The school announced a leadership change after Boykin went 7-17 in his two seasons.

Boykin was named the interim head coach at Hampton in 2024, following the sudden removal of Robert Prunty as head coach. The Pirates went 26-29 in Prunty’s five seasons as head coach. Despite the late change, Hampton went 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the CAA during the 2024 season. The Pirates lost four games by one score, including a double OT loss to #20 Rhode Island (46-44), a 20-14 loss versus #13 Villanova, and a 24-21 loss versus #11 Richmond.

In 2025, Hampton slumped to 2-10 overall and 0-8 in the CAA. The Pirates were the only team to finish winless in CAA play. The 2025 season also saw 9 of the 10 losses by double digits, with the two victories coming against NCAA Division II Elizabeth City State (4-6) and Norfolk State (1-11) at home.

Since Hampton joined the CAA starting with the 2022 season, the program hasn’t posted a winning record in football. The Pirates are 16-30 overall and 8-26 in CAA games. Only one game for the 2026 season is known: a road trip to Maryland on September 5.

Boykin is the sixth FCS coaching change to occur in the current cycle. Albany (CAA), Portland State (Big Sky), Samford (SoCon), Southern (SWAC), and Weber State (Big Sky) have also announced changes. The full list can be found here.
