Florida A&M Hires Quinn Gray to Lead Football Program

The Florida A&M Rattlers will have a familiar face leading the football program. FAMU named former quarterback Quinn Gray as its next head coach, after three successful years at NCAA Division II Albany State.

Gray graduated from Florida A&M in 2002, but not before setting numerous records. He played in the NFL from 2002 through 2008 and later became a head coach for Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida, from 2017 through 2019. In 2020, he was named the quarterbacks coach at Alcorn State for three seasons. In 2023, Gray took the head coaching job at Albany State. The Rams went 6-5 in Gray’s first season and 6-4 in 2024.

The 2025 campaign saw Albany State go perfect against D-II opponents in the regular season. The lone blemish was a 33-25 loss at Florida A&M in September, where the Rams held a 14-10 lead at halftime. Albany State went on to win the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title and received the #1 seed for Super Region 2 in the playoffs. The Rams would reach the quarterfinals, but fell 31-24 to Newberry. It was Albany State’s first D-II playoff win since 2010 and only the third time they reached the quarterfinals. Gray went 24-11 overall and 20-4 in SIAC games in three seasons, while never finishing lower than second.

Gray will replace James Colzie, who went 12-12 overall and 9-7 in the SWAC in two seasons with FAMU. Colzie lost to Mississippi Valley State in back-to-back seasons, including the 2025 season finale, which likely sealed his departure. Gray will look to emulate the success FAMU had under Willie Simmons, who went 45-13 in three seasons while winning the SWAC and Celebration Bowl in 2023.
