The 1970 – 1979 decade of the FCS was a short one, given that it comprised only two seasons. The split of Division I into FBS and FCS took place in 1978 with Florida A&M capturing the inaugural FCS National Title. Through the 2019 season, it is the only National Title for both FAMU and an Historically Black College and University member.
1979 saw Eastern Kentucky capture their first FCS title. It was also the start of Eastern Kentucky’s nearly two decade dominance of the Ohio Valley Conference.
