Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey has been hired as the head coach of the Northern Colorado Bears. McCaffrey had been the coach of the Valor Christian high school team for the past two seasons which included a state championship in 2018.
McCaffrey spent 13 seasons in the NFL from 1991 through 2003 with the final 9 seasons as part of the Denver Broncos. McCaffrey finished his career with 565 receptions for 7,422 yards and 55 receiving touchdowns. He won three Super Bowls in his career; one with the San Francisco 49ers and two with Denver.
McCaffrey is replacing Earnest Collins Jr., who was head coach for 9 seasons at UNC. Collins went 28-72 overall with a Big Sky record of 19-53. The Bears only finished with a winning record twice and they did not reach the Playoffs in his tenure. Ed McCaffrey is the 16th head coach of the UNC program.
Ed McCaffrey is the father of Christian McCaffrey, the currently a running back on the Carolina Panthers and the 2015 Heisman Trophy runner-up.
