The 2024 FCS season is months away but the 2025 FCS National Championship game is already in the news. The title game will be played on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, and be televised on ESPN.
The FCS National Championship has been played on a Saturday or Sunday every year since 2011. The most recent time the game was not played on a weekend was the first year Frisco took over the hosting rights in 2010 when Eastern Washington defeated Delaware 20-19 on Friday, January 7, 2011. Moving away from the weekend slot is primarily to avoid competing against the NFL, the most-watched sport in the US, and recent championship games have seen a noticeable decline in viewership.
ESPN and the NCAA recently agreed to a new TV rights contract for ESPN to broadcast the NCAA Championships through the 2031-32 academic year, which includes the rights to the FCS Championship. The NCAA originally stated the FCS Championship game would be broadcast on ABC each year in its news release from January 2024 but the agreement appears to have been amended based on this news.
