The NCAA has made a proposal that will impact the Division I Transfer Portal window and instituted a blanket waiver that amends the redshirt policy. The Transfer Portal policy would go into effect with the 2024-25 academic year while the redshirt policy already applies to the upcoming season.
There are two transfer windows, one in the fall that opens for 30 days after the Championship Games and a second one from April 15 through April 30. The proposal would condense the two windows into one, which would be open from Monday, December 9 through Tuesday, January 7, 2025, and remove the spring window altogether. Teams that compete in the Playoff and National Championship games after January 7 will still have the additional five days following the game to enter the portal. The Division I Council will meet in October to provide approval for the Transfer Window change.
The NCAA has also granted a blanket waiver for the redshirt policy, which states that postseason games – both conference championships and FCS playoff games – will not count toward the limit. The rule is that a player may take a redshirt if they participate in no more than 4 contests during the season. Theoretically, a player could play as many as 9 games in a season consisting of 4 regular season contests and 5 FCS Playoff games while still being redshirt-eligible in 2024.
