Bubba McDowell has been let go by Prairie View A&M (SWAC) after three seasons in charge. McDowell led the Panthers to the 2023 SWAC Championship, losing to Florida A&M 35-14. McDowell is the second FCS head coaching change on Sunday following Valparaiso’s Landon Fox.
McDowell took over in 2022 following Eric Dooley’s four-year tenure. Dooley led the Panthers to the 2021 SWAC Championship game but fell to Jackson State 27-10. McDowell went 6-5 in 2022 and shared the SWAC West division title with Dooley and Southern but lost the head-to-head matchup. In 2023, they tied for the SWAC West with Alcorn State but won the head-to-head matchup to clinch the SWAC title game berth. In 2024, the Panthers finished 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the SWAC to finish 4th in the West.
McDowell went 17-18 overall and 14-10 in the SWAC over his three years. Before taking over as the head coach, he had been Prairie View A&M’s defensive backs coach from 2012 through 2018 and the assistant head coach from 2019 through 2022.
