Stetson’s Brian Young Resigns

Brian Young has resigned as Stetson’s (Pioneer) head coach after four seasons and an overall record of 13-30. He’s the fourth PFL head coaching change in the 2024-25 offseason cycle.

Young took over in 2021 following the resignation of long-time coach Roger Hughes. Hughes was the first head coach for Stetson after it reestablished football and he compiled a 31-50 overall record in 8 seasons including back-to-back winning seasons in 2018 (8-2) and 2019 (7-4). With Young at the helm, the Hatters opened the 2021 season 2-0 against NAIA opponents and finished 4-7 overall with a 2-6 PFL record. The following season was a similar result as Stetson finished 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the PFL.

In 2023, Stetson once again started 2-0 but lost three straight games, defeated Presbyterian, and finished 3-8 overall with a 1-7 record in the PFL. 2024 marked the fourth straight season that Stetson opened 2-0 against non-NCAA foes but that was the extent of their victories. The Hatters went 0-7 in the PFL and 2-9 overall. Young went 5-25 in PFL conference games in his four years.

Young graduated from Georgia Southern in 1997, played professionally in the Indoor Football League, and began his coaching career as an assistant with the Georgia Force in the AFL, was an assistant with Mississippi College from 2005 through 2009, and coached defensive backs at Cornell in 2010 and 2011. From 2013 through 2019, he was Stetson’s defensive coordinator and moved to Georgia Southern in 2020 as a senior defensive analyst before returning to DeLand as head coach in 2021.
