Tennessee State (OVC-Big South) head coach Eddie George is leaving for the same position with the Bowling Green Falcons (MAC). George spent four years in charge of the Tigers, finishing with a 24-22 overall record and an FCS playoff appearance in 2024.
George was hired in April 2021 to replace Rod Reed. Reed went 57-60 overall, 30-50 in the Ohio Valley Conference, and made one FCS playoff appearance in 11 seasons. George opened his tenure with 5-6 and 4-7 overall records in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In 2023, the Tigers posted the first winning season under George with a 6-5 overall record. It was the first winning season since 2017 when TSU also went 6-5.
George and the Tigers broke through in 2024 by finishing in a four-way tie for first in the Big South-OVC Football Association. It was the first conference title for Tennessee State since winning the OVC in 1999 under Lawrence Cole. TSU lost the first round matchup against Montana 41-27. George was named the 2024 Big South-OVC Coach of the Year and was runner-up for the 2024 Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year given to the top FCS coach.
Tennessee State will open the 2025 season with four straight games in Nashville. The Tigers will play the season opener against North Carolina A&T (CAA) on August 30 in the John Merritt Classic. Next up is the defending national champion North Dakota State Bison (MVFC) on September 6 followed by Alabama A&M (SWAC) on September 13 in the Legacy Series. The Tigers open OVC-Big South play on Saturday, September 27 against Tennessee Tech.
