The Western Carolina Catamounts (SoCon) will play at the Appalachian State Mountaineers (Sun Belt) on Labor Day weekend in 2028. The two teams will play in Boone, North Carolina, on September 2, 2028.
WCU and App State have met 78 times since the first matchup in 1932, with App State holding a 60-17-1 lead in the series. The two teams were previously members of the Southern Conference until the Mountaineers left to join the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference. App State has won the previous 9 meetings, including the most recent matchup in 2013 by a score of 48-27.
Western Carolina is slated to play against FBS teams annually through 2028 including Wake Forest (ACC) this season, Cincinnati (Big 12) in 2026, East Carolina (American) in 2027, and the newly added App State matchup in 2028. The Catamounts also have a 2031 matchup versus Georgia (SEC) scheduled.
Appalachian State has three future FCS opponents: Lindenwood (OVC-Big South) in 2025, South Carolina State (MEAC) in 2026, and the WCU game in 2028. There are almost 300 future FCS versus FBS matchups scheduled for 2026 and beyond, including 56 for the 2028 season.
