The Portland State Vikings (Big Sky) will play at the Stanford Cardinal (ACC) in 2028, according to John Canzano (H/T FBSchedules). The two teams will meet on Saturday, September 16, 2028, in the first matchup of the two schools.
The Vikings have at least one FBS team schedule each season through the end of the decade, including two FBS foes the next three seasons. Portland State has played two FBS opponents each year since 2014, with the 2020-21 COVID-impacted season being the lone exception. In 2025, Portland State will play at BYU (Big 12) and Hawaii (Mountain West). In 2026, they’ll face San Diego State (Pac-12) and Oregon (Big Ten). In 2027, the Vikings will play Oregon State (Pac-12) and San Jose State (Mountain West). Beyond Stanford in 2028, the Vikings will play at Oregon again in 2029.
Stanford’s game against Portland State is a rare occurrence: they’ve only played 8 FCS opponents all-time from 1991 through 2024. The Cardinal are 6-2 in those games, with losses against UC Davis (Great West) in 2005 and Sacramento State (Big Sky) in 2023. Other than the Portland State matchup in 2028, Stanford only has one other FCS opponent lined up with a 2030 game against William & Mary (Patriot League).
Portland State’s 2028 game against Stanford is one of 57 scheduled so far. A full list of all future FCS-FBS matchups can be found here.
