Larry Scott Leaving Howard to Take Auburn Assistant Role

Howard head coach Larry Scott is leaving to become the tight ends coach at Auburn. Scott spent six seasons at Howard, compiling a 23-37 overall record and winning two MEAC titles during that time.

Scott played offensive tackle at South Florida from 1996 through 1999 and started his coaching career in 2001. After four seasons of coaching at the high school level, he became a graduate assistant at his alma mater, South Florida, in 2006. He was promoted to the tight ends coach for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He took the offensive line coaching role at USF in 2009, but returned to coaching the tight ends in 2010 and 2011. His final season with the Bulls was coaching the running backs in 2012.

In 2013, he moved on to the Miami Hurricanes to become the tight ends coach. He would stay there three seasons and was named the interim head coach for the second half of the 2015 season. He led the Hurricanes to a 4-2 record in his six games as coach. Miami finished 8-5 overall and made a Sun Bowl appearance.

Scott became the tight ends coach at Tennessee for the 2016 season and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2017. He then moved to the Florida Gators as the tight ends coach for the 2018 and 2019 seasons before becoming head coach at Howard in 2020.

While Scott had an overall losing record at Howard, he led the Bison to back-to-back MEAC titles in 2022 and 2023. It was the first time the football program had won back-to-back conference championships and the first MEAC title since 1993. In 2023, Howard was the MEAC representative for the Celebration Bowl, but lost 30-26 against Florida A&M.

Scott is the 18th FCS coaching change to occur in the current cycle. Albany (CAA), Bucknell (Patriot League), Cal Poly (Big Sky), Florida A&M (SWAC), Gardner-Webb (OVC-Big South) Hampton (CAA), Mercer (SoCon), Monmouth (CAA), New Hampshire (CAA), Penn (Ivy League), Portland State (Big Sky), Sacramento State (Big Sky), Samford (SoCon), Southern (SWAC), VMI (SoCon), Weber State (Big Sky), and West Georgia (UAC) have also announced changes.
