Hampton University removed head coach Robert Prunty from his position as head football coach on Tuesday. No details were provided on why the change in football leadership occurred.
Prunty was hired before the 2018 season and led them to a 7-3 record as an FCS independent in his first season. The Pirates moved to the Big South in 2019 and went 5-7 in 2019 and 5-6 in 2021. Hampton did not compete during the 2020-21 season. Hampton joined the CAA in 2022 with records of 4-7 in 2022 and 5-6 in 2023. Prunty finished 26-29 overall and was 8-21 in conference games during his 5 seasons with Hampton.
Trent Boykin will serve as the interim coach for the 2024 season. He has previous head coaching experience with the NCAA Division II program at Lane College. He went 4-17 overall and 4-14 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) from 2008 through 2009. Most recently, Boykin was an assistant coach with Akron from 2012 through 2018 and was hired by Hampton in 2020 to coach the running backs and special teams.
Hampton will start the 2024 season at home against Morgan State on Saturday, August 31.
