VMI will be marching on a new football in 2024. A post on the team’s social media account noted that the re-sodding of the field has started and that a new film room will be constructed as well. VMI plays on the Alumni Memorial Field at Foster Stadium in Lexington, Virginia, which was constructed in 1962 for $250,000. The stadium underwent renovations in 2006 that added entranceways, concourses, restrooms, and locker rooms under the stands. VMI installed a Brute Bermuda grass surface before the 1998 season.
VMI is at least the sixth FCS team to replace its football field this offseason. Bucknell, Mercer, Mississippi Valley State, North Carolina Central, and Tennessee State announced the installation of a new FieldTurf surface this offseason. Unlike those five schools that have elected to install artificial turf, VMI will keep using a grass surface.
The Keydets will see action on the new field for the first time on Saturday, September 7 against Bucknell and will also welcome Norfolk State to Alumni Memorial Field two weeks later. VMI ends the 2024 season with home games in four of their last six games as The Citadel (10/19), Furman (11/2), Mercer (11/9), and East Tennessee State (11/23) will make the trip to Lexington.
