Each year some FCS members look outside the Division I umbrella to fill out their football schedules and 2024 is no different. FCS teams are slated to play 58 games against non-Division I opponents in 2024 with matchups versus Division II, Division III, NAIA, NCCAA, and even one against a non-affiliated team (Lincoln University from Oakland, California). Currently, two games will feature the FCS team going on the road to play a non-DI opponent: FCS newcomer Mercyhurst on Thursday, August 29 at Wheeling and Presbyterian against Erskine on Saturday, September 7. Both Wheeling (Mountain East Conference) and Erskine (Gulf South Conference) are Division II members.
43 FCS teams will play against 48 different non-Division I opponents from 22 different conferences outside Division I in 2024. 12 teams – Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Butler, Davidson, Mercyhurst, Morehead State, Morgan State, Presbyterian, St. Thomas (MN), Stetson, Valparaiso, and West Georgia – have 2 or more games against non-DI opponents. Mercyhurst has the most non-Division I opponents in 2024 with 4 while Butler has 3 such matchups scheduled.
Below is a table showing the different number of matchups against each affiliation and a table showing how many non-DI opponents each conference plays in 2024.
