Ball State (MAC) and Butler (Pioneer Football League) have completed what has effectively become a trade involving coaches. Ball State assistant head coach Kevin Lynch has been hired as Butler’s head coach to replace Mike Uremovich, who previously left Butler to become head coach at Ball State.
Lynch, the son of former Butler head Bill Lynch, was with Ball State from 2016 through 2024 in various roles starting as an assistant in 2016. In 2020, he was named the offensive coordinator and running backs coach as the Cardinals put up at least 27 points in each game en route to the MAC Championship. In 2021, he swapped out the running backs coaching responsibilities for the quarterback coaching duties. In 2024, he was named the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.
The older Lynch was the head coach of Butler from 1985 through 1989 where he went 36-12-3 overall and won four NCAA Division II Heartland Collegiate Conference titles. He too coached at Ball State from 1995 through 2002 (37-53 overall and 1 MAC title in 1996). The younger Lynch will succeed Uremovich who went 23-11 overall and 15-9 in the PFL during his three seasons. It was the first time Butler had three consecutive winning seasons since the older Lynch did so from 1987 through 1989.
