The Charlotte 49ers made a change to its 2021 schedule on Tuesday. The 49ers swapped out Duquesne for Gardner-Webb.
Charlotte was originally scheduled to host Duquesne on Saturday, September 4, 2021. However, that changed when the Duke-Charlotte game scheduled for the following week was moved up to September 4.
Charlotte will now host Gardner-Webb on Saturday, September 11, 2021. The 49ers did not state whether the contest against Duquesne will be held in a different season or has been canceled altogether.
Charlotte has three FCS teams on its future schedules. They will take on Norfolk State (2020) and William & Mary (2022) in addition to Gardner-Webb in 2021.
Gardner-Webb has scheduled FBS opponents Georgia Tech (2020), Georgia Southern (2021, Ohio (2021), Liberty (2022), Appalachian State (2023), and East Carolina (2023) on its future schedules.
Charlotte is scheduled to begin the 2020 season on the road against Tennessee on Saturday, September 5. Gardner-Webb has Division II opponent Limestone College to start its season on Thursday, September 3. It will be the first game in charge for new head coach Tre Lamb.
