The Western Illinois Leathernecks and Northern Illinois Huskies are set to renew their in-state rivalry in 2024 according to FBSchedules.
Northern Illinois will host Western Illinois on Saturday, August 31, 2024 with the Leathernecks receiving a guarantee of $350,000 for the contest.
The two teams have frequently matched up as they have met 40 times since 1903. The most recent game was a 28-23 Western Illinois upset with the Leathernecks taking a 28-7 lead midway through the third quarter but ultimately held on for the victory.
Northern Illinois leads the overall series 21-18 with another game ending in a tie (page 207).
Northern Illinois has FCS opponents Maine (2021), Eastern Illinois (2022), Southern Illinois (2023), Holy Cross (2025), and Illinois State (2026) on its future schedules. They are slated to begin the 2020 season against Rhode Island as well.
Western Illinois has thus far scheduled FBS opponents Ball State (2021), Minnesota (2022), Wisconsin (2026), and Purdue (2028) over the next decade. Oklahoma State is also on this season’s schedule for September 19.
